Interview with Larry Hartsell

May 2, 20140 Comments

Larry Hartsell began his training in Jeet Kune Do having already achieved the rank of Black Belt in Judo. He studied under Hidetaka Nishiyama in shotokan karate at UCLA and later in Kenpo Karate under Ed Parker and Dan Inosanto.

Sifu Larry had an extensive background in law enforcement, military, and executive protection. He also served as a trainer for the Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers of the NFL.

“I encourage my students to seek out other people [for training] – see what they have. One thing people should do more of in the martial arts – give credit. In my seminars if I saw something from Gene Lebell I give him credit. Or from Tim Geoghegan, an old irish wrestler. He taught me some holds a long time ago. Always try to give credit where credit’s due.”

Sifu Hartsell passed away on August 20th, 2007. May he rest in peace.
